Pick-Ups!
Pick-ups are the phase in the movie making when you go into editing and realize something isn’t working right, or you’d need better angles. Either way, once you realize what it is you need, you write a new scene, bring your actors back, and shoot it. This was something we couldn’t really do on Absolution because once filming was over everyone pretty much went their separate ways.
While I regret this, we did have a chance to shoot some pick-ups a few days ago. I had gone over to the McFarlands to edit Episode 6 “Roeber”. I had decided that it would be interesting to put the first flashback as the first scene in the episode. Well, when I had opened the files to take a look at the scenes, both Micah and I agreed that those flashbacks were terrible and new ones had to be written and filmed.
Thankfully, since these flashbacks were about Micah’s character, Roeber, it would be easy to write and shoot new scenes.
This was a rare opportunity for us, so we had to take advantage. Micah and I spent about an hour going over story for the flashbacks, then we had to go over all the details we wanted within them.
What was amazing was the fact that we had a few friends over as well, they were there originally to do music. We decided that Roeber’s flashback should include someone else within them. This is where Gabrielle Lavoie came in. She had been there originally to record a piano song of hers, but because we had been planning to cast her as a character in Season 2, we felt we could use her – and that character – to our advantage.
This was a great addition to the flashbacks and created a whole new dynamic for how people will perceive Roeber as a character. It was also good, because we were able to take everything we learned during the process of originally writing and filming these scenes and put it to use here. Therefore, these scenes, as you will soon notice, may appear to be better filmed and put together. Either way, it just goes to show that pick-ups are definitely something worth making time for.
P.S. Because of the pick-ups as well as the large amount of editing that has to be done for this episode, it will be delayed. I know I had stated that I wouldn’t let it get delayed anymore than today, but to be honest, the scale of the episode is too big to do in this amount of time. Trust me though, it will be worth the wait. We might also be premiering it somewhere… More on that as it comes.
